So, you already have a website up and running. Step 1 of your online journey is complete.
As your site grows, you will soon find that it can make use of some extra resources to run smoothly. Shared hosting is perfect for most small-scale projects, but should they start to expand, that’s when the problems start.
What to do?
Тhe next logical solution is virtual private servers or VPS. It is virtual because it uses server virtualization software to create several virtual servers on a single physical machine. It is private because each user gets exclusive access to the VPS she or he is paying for.
VPS hosting grants much greater control over the server configuration and administration than any shared plan and scales quite a lot. It can handle even resource-heavy and traffic-laden websites.
To get a better idea of what is VPS, check out the different types of hosting in our Game of Thrones-style review.
During my evaluation process, I tried to go in every nook and cranny to sift out only the most deserving candidates. This included separating my findings into three distinct groups, answering three essential questions:
What’s the situation under the hood?
What’s included apart from the server?
What’s the company all about?

Hostinger, a Lithuania-based company with 150+ subsidiaries and data centers in the US, the UK, Netherlands, Lithuania, Singapore, Indonesia, and Brazil serves 29+ million clients worldwide. It is also one of the cheapest shared and VPS Hosting.
Here is my analysis on this cheap VPS hosting:
With Intel Xeon Silver processors and fast SSD servers, Hostinger offers both Windows and Linux VPS hosting.
On Linux servers, their plans range from 1GB to 8GB RAM, 20GB to 160GB SSD storage and 1 to 8 core processing.
Starting at just $3.95/month(when bought for 4 years) with 1GB RAM, 20GB SSD storage, 1TB Bandwidth, 1 Core CPU, undoubtedly, the best selling point for the Hostinger VPS services are their price tags.
Note: You have a 30-day money-back guarantee if you worried about pre-paying for 4 years.
On Windows servers, the plans range from 2-16GB RAM, 50-400GB SSD storage and 4 core CPU on all plans. When you prepay for 2 years, you pay $26/month for starters package which includes 4 cores CPU, 2GB RAM, 50GB SSD, and 4000GB bandwidth.
On Linux servers, all plans come with auto-installer with CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Suse operating system templates, ready to be installed in 1-click. Options to change VPS resources in realtime, easily reboot, change to a new OS or install web scripts and options to backup and restore VPS container makes Hostinger one of the easiest to use VPS cPanel.
If you know your way around web servers, full root access gives you complete control over your VPS. The best of all — Even the cheapest of the plans come with a dedicated IP with IPv4 and IPv6 for better security and smooth functioning of all scripts and extensions.
I posted a ticket to see what I can expect from the support team and I got a reply within 15 minutes. The operator answered my queries about server power and scalability and even pointed out some options I had previously missed. I’d take that over useless chat and phone assistants any day.
Hostinger User Reviews Around The Web
Hostinger is one of the most liked hosting providers at the moment. Users praise mostly its price and performance, but the support also gets mentioned often for going beyond their immediate responsibilities in order to help.
Hostinger offers reliable VPS services, which can provide shelter for most small and medium businesses. Considering the quality of service, and performance at that price, you will struggle to find any better VPS host than Hostinger.

Kamatera, an Israeli-based provider, operating since 1995, is one name you don’t hear very often but definitely should.
It offers an extremely customizable and scalable cloud infrastructure, a key trait for any good VPS service. Let’s see how scalable it is as a Managed Linux VPS cloud hosting.
Here are a few points to show how Kamatera’s VPS cloud hardware is uncommon and extensively scalable.
You can customize by adding more resources to your VPS server by mixing up different options on Kamatera’s VPS server customization platform.
Once you land on Kamatera’s VPS page, you immediately stumble upon a very convenient price calculator that lets you adjust each server stat to see how it affects the monthly price. You can even break that down to hourly costs.
A couple of handy features you can add are the fully managed support and external daily backups.
Kamatera proudly offers 24/7 communication via live chat, phone, and mail. It is, after all, expected from any reliable VPS providers.
I got connected to the chat almost immediately and had a pleasant sales and technical discussion with a support operator who really sounded like he knew his stuff.
Kamatera shows some excellent client reviews, even though there aren’t that many of them. Existing customers all agree – the hardware is very fast, scales easily, and is highly customizable.
Kamatera is so versatile that you can easily deploy and host a website, CRM, ERP, IoT project, VoIP server or a project of any scale. Anyone, from a small startup to a large enterprise, can find a server, choose its configuration, and deploy it in no time.
Scala Hosting is an independent hosting provider of VPS and Cloud solutions.
The company also offers shared and email hosting, reseller services, and domain name registration.
Scala Hosting has been quietly working its magic for over 16 years now, amassing 50,000+ clients and 700,000 websites in the process.
In 2019, the host became an exclusive cloud partner of one of the country’s biggest telecom providers – Vivacom.
Scala Hosting houses its clients in two ultra-modern data centers – in Dallas, Texas (US) and Sofia, Bulgaria (EU).
The two facilities look like they came straight from a Bond movie. You can only enter after multiple security and biometric checks. What follows are endless racks of web servers, properly isolated and cooled at all times.
The villains are the only thing missing.
The best thing about the hardware is its extreme scalability (oh, now I get where the name Scala comes from).
Right from the get-go, you will find a “Build your own Cloud VPS” wizard. It lets you adjust your essential vital resources and see how that changes the price. Thе margins are impressive:
No indication of a monthly bandwidth cap. The sales support revealed that you get about 3TB by default. Each additional terabyte of traffic comes at $10.
Being as scalable as it is, Scala Hosting does not offer much in terms of in-built features.
Each fully managed VPS hosting account comes prepacked with the proprietary SPanel and gets backed up daily on an external location.
The only difference between the four deals is the number of allocated system resources.
On the other hand, you can purchase pretty much anything as an extra. I am talking about things like cPanel licenses, SSL certificates, WHMCS, LiteSpeed, the works.
Even though it charges for a lot of the VPS add-ons, Scala Hosting likes to keep things affordable. The entry-level deals start from $12.00/mo. The price is not tied to any long-term contracts or promo periods.
What you see is what you pay.
The Scala Hosting contact page lets us know the company is there for its clients 24/7 via live chat and ticketing plus a phone line, available Mon-Fri 2:30 am – 5 pm GMT-8.
The messenger was easily accessible and connected me immediately.
I got an operator named Angel and boy, what an angel he was. He went way and beyond the standard one-word replies and templates, actually eager to explain his answers in detail.
In less than 15 minutes, I was able to clear any information that wasn’t already available on the website.
The only thing that remained iffy was the phone support working hours. The website states some hours during weekdays, but Angel reassured me they are, in fact, 24/7 online as well.
Scala Hosting Trustpilot score: 4.9 / 5 (189 reviews)
Scala Hosting HostAdvice score: 9.5 / 10 (187 reviews)
Clients obviously love Scala. There’s no other way to achieve the whopping 97% Excellent ratings and overall impressive scores across all review platforms.
Hosting users appreciate professionalism and that’s exactly what they get with Scala Hosting. Reliable servers, amazing control panel, superb tech support – people don’t seem to be running out of compliments.
Scala Hosting might not be the best-known name on this list, but long-time users of VPS hosting services are well-aware of it. The company combines scalable packages with impressive support. They bring to you amazing deals that won’t cost you an arm and a leg. An option worth considering if you are an SMB or a growing enterprise.
2-4 CPU cores, 2-8GB RAM
Bluehost started in 2003, hosts over 2 million websites as of 2020. It is quite popular for its affordable shared hosting plans. When it comes to VPS hosting, BlueHost tags itself as a next-generation VPS that offers control, customization, scalability and powerful performance.
Let’s check if it is true!
For good speed and reliable performance, they offer fast and secure SSD storage, scalable RAM and flexible multi-server management feature to add more servers.
The cheapest VPS plan starts at $18.99/mo. It comes with 2GB RAM, 30GB fast and reliable SSD space, 2 cores CPU and 1TB bandwidth. Bigger plans offer:
Feature-wise, Free domain registration, free SSL certificate, access control are apparent positives for me.
Best Bluehost VPS prices come with the longest prepaid plans. But the 30-day money-back guarantee should give you enough time to tweak around and cancel if not satisfied.
You can contact Support via phone and live chat — I decided to try the latter.
I got a hold of an agent quite easily and I asked a few sales questions and got the expected templated responses. But for sales chat, it was alright. For technical assistance
Bluehost User Reviews around the Web
Bluehost is another giant in the hosting world that has negative reviews. Users complain the most about the advanced technical support – the basic problem with EIG hosting providers.
Considering top-notch uptime, good speed, fast and reliable SSD storage, Bluehost is one of the best VPS hosting providers for starters, but resource-hungry projects are not exactly a perfect match for their VPS offers.

InterWorx, Plesk Web Pro, or cPanel Pro

I was thoroughly impressed — certainly one of the best VPS services in terms of support.

It’s very easy to recommend a company like Liquid Web — quality is of the highest standards, and you have plenty of room to grow. Throw that outstanding support in the bundle and you get an irresistible hosting deal.
GreenGeeks, the brand ambassador of green hosting has ten years of experience under its belt. With their innovative robust technologies and a friendly attitude they offer shared, dedicated, reseller, and, of course, VPS hosting.
Here’s what’s included in the latter.
Before heading on to hardware details, let me make it clear — GreenGeeks only have managed VPS hosting plans. So, the prices might seem expensive compared to Unmanaged VPS.
GreenGeeks puts a strong emphasis on technology. Its servers feature Intel Xeon processors and Raid-10 SSD arrays, hooked up to a gigabit connection.
Besides their advanced storage servers, they have very competitive packages.
GreenGeeks VPS web hosting comes in three flavors:
All plans comes with managed support and 30 day money back guarantee.
GreenGeeks servers are fully managed and offers instant account setup. You get an account with cPanel with all cPanel default scripts. On the top of that you can install any script as you get complete root access.
One uncommon feature GreenGeeks offers is the blacklist-free IP. The provider regularly scans IP addresses and removes the ones that do get blacklisted.
Adding free website migration, free SSL to all the above hardware and features makes GreenGeeks, a solid virtual private server.
GreenGeeks has a reputation for friendly and efficient support—and for good reason. The agents are polite, jovial, and well-trained. The support answered all my sales and technical questions quickly.
All in all, GreenGeeks runs an enviable support service.
GreenGeeks User Reviews around the Web
Customers tend to praise the support and the excellent performance of the platform.
It’s also reassuring to see the GreenGeeks’s team address many of the reviews, both positive and negative. It’s a good sign the provider cares about its customers and making the experience right for them.
GreenGeeks is a decent choice for mid-sized projects. The VPS hosting provider throws in robust features, a couple of freebies, all supported by a friendly and effective team. It’s an all-round impressive option.
InMotion Hosting, a host known for its well-trained support staff is one of the largest web hosts in the US. From shared, all the way up to dedicated servers, they offer a wide range of hosting services
Let’s check how is their VPS hosting service.
Inmotion offers both managed and unmanaged cloud VPS host services on Dell hardware.
The cheapest managed VPS hosting plan from Inmotion costs $29.99(when you buy for 2 years). At that price, you get 75GB SSD space, 4GB RAM, and 4TB monthly bandwidth which is more decent processing power for Ecommerce stores and mid-scale businesses.
When it comes to unmanaged Cloud VPS plans, the cheapest plan costs you $5/month. You can get 1GB RAM, 25GB SSD storage (20X faster), 1TB Bandwidth, all essential server tools, SSH keys, and DDoS protection. All you need is a command-line experience.
InMotion supports a broad set of features for all VPS accounts, especially considering the relatively low price tag. You get to choose server technology, and the provider adds a free cPanel license to the deal.
Starting from free cPanel license deal, 2-hour free sysadmin consultation as launch assist, unlimited add-on domains, free SSL to DDoS protection, you get all that you need from Inmotion managed VPS hosting plan.
One extra service I found particularly intriguing was the web design feature that you could purchase with each plan.\InMotion
When it comes to technical support, InMotion is the best. The support-staff with 160 hours of training are technically sound.
Any reputable VPS hosting provider would want its clients to be well taken care of, and InMotion makes no exception. Existing clients can reach the support team 24/7 via chat, mail, phone, ticket, even Skype.
Additionally, every curious bypasser can benefit from the extensive tutorial base and community forums.
InMotion User Reviews around the Web
InMotion Hosting, in general, is often praised for its superb support. Indeed, the company allocates enough time to find and train the best people to make their support team are diligent and thorough. In addition, they have the best knowledge base in the industry.
InMotion with its more than generous robust plans, one of the best uptime and loading speed deservedly is the best VPS hosting 2020. Any small and mid-scale project can benefit from their virtual servers and ensure its long-term scalability.
Back in 2001, system administrator Bryan Muthig started a hobby company called Iniquinet. Later, it was renamed to A2 Hosting. Its mission was to provide a full spectrum of hosting services with a strong technical focus.
A2 aims to keep the burden off inexperienced clients while providing great web developer tools for the pros.
A noble mission, indeed.
Let’s see how well they do in accomplishing it.
Powerful Intel Xeon servers take the load with the A2 VPS services. The tier 1 resource allocation could be better. However, you can still secure a formidable 150GB RAID-10 storage space, 4TB monthly transfer, and 8GB RAM on the most powerful VPS.
Not too shabby.
A2 Hosting is among the few hosts that offer both Linux and Windows servers. This makes them a notable mention for “Best Windows VPS Host” lists in the future as well.
A2 Hosting have divided its VPS offerings into three categories — core VPS (with root access), managed VPS (without root access), and unmanaged VPS. As this review compares only managed hosting deals, let’s see how those packages stack up against the competition.
No VPS feature list will be complete without a bunch of free goodies, so check out what A2 has in store:
And that’s just for the cheapest package, coming at $32.95 with the discount for new clients.
Overall, A2 hosting supports a rich set of features, but other providers manage to outmatch that with an even lower price.
If there is an area that A2 excels in, it’s definitely their level of hosting expertise.
My first encounter with the Support Team did not leave a great impression…in that it didn’t happen at all. I was hanging around, #1 in the chat queue for a couple of minutes before I had to leave.
Still, I decided later to give them a second chance, and I’m glad I did!
This time, the agent picked the chat immediately and answered all my queries. I didn’t get that robotic feel which big companies tend to encourage in their support efforts. Everything was clear and to-the-point.
I tested the Live Chat a couple more times, which only solidified my positive experience.
A2 Hosting Trustpilot score: 4.2 / 5 (926 reviews)
A2 Hosting HostAdvice score: 9.2 / 10 (1,202 reviews)
A2 Hosting gathers an impressive 81% Excellent ratings in Trustpilot, the biggest review aggregator on the Web. Reliability, helpful support, and fast servers are often-mentioned reasons for A2’s fame.
Moving from another host is a breeze for new clients, as this provider takes full care of their data migration.
While there are more affordable VPS services out there, A2 is a worthy consideration. It’s mainly due to their excellent support. A company that takes such good care of non-clients is sure to go to great extents for its trusted followers!
SiteGround is one of the fastest-growing companies, now hosting over 2,000,000 domains.
Residing in Bulgaria, the SG team is clear proof that there are no geographical boundaries for a quality hosting service. With servers spread across three continents, every new SiteGround client can choose a location closest to their audience.
Over 400 employees take care of more than 1500 tickets, 1000 phone calls, and 3000 chat requests per day.
Some companies can’t do that in a year’s time.
The numbers speak for themselves.
The SiteGround team ensures your new VPS account will come with everything pre-equipped for a smoothly running project. This includes WHM&cPanel, mail server, firewall, software autoinstaller, private DNS, SSL certificate…well, you get the picture.
Speed is a key priority with SiteGround, and their server setup duly reflects that. All their machines run on Nginx technology and pack SSD hard drives, CDN, and SuperCacher.
Finally, they’re a host that understands the utmost importance of website speed.
Feature-wise things can’t get much better than what SiteGround has to offer. Their VPS deals are in fact Cloud server packages. And so, you can enjoy full resource scalability as your project grows.
If you are among the millions of WordPress fans out there, look no further for your top host choice!
SiteGround and WP have a long and warm relationship. The provider has been actively contributing to the WordPress project for years.
This reflects on the VPS services as well — 1-click autoinstaller, automatic updates, staging environment, SuperCacher, SSH access, integrated GIT for developers — everything possible to lift the load off your shoulders.
Hands down one of the best VPS hosting for WordPress out there!
Looking at the number of cases the SG team deals with every day, they must be one busy swarm of bees. Hopefully, this doesn’t reflect on the quality of service each client receives.
I headed to the Live Chat and waited no more than 10-20 seconds before a representative picked it up.
I had an enjoyable conversation where the operator gave me much more than the short, templated responses you can often get with big hosts.
Yet another excellent selling point for Siteground!
SiteGround Trustpilot score: 4.8 / 5 (2,215 reviews)
SiteGround HostAdvice score: 9.7 / 10 (3,879 reviews)
SiteGround is the best hosting provider in terms of client feedback. Not only their score is next to perfect, but there are thousands of positive reviews all over the internet.
The excellent customer support is undoubtedly one of SG’s best selling points. Finding adequate assistance is still pretty rare in the hosting industry, so the ones that do it right – shine brighter than the rest.
An impressive all-around performance from SiteGround. Great care for the little details and outstanding support team. While they don’t offer the most affordable VPS plans out there, the company compensates for that with superior quality of service. The stellar WordPress services are just the cherry on top.
Fast and friendly support
FastComet is one of the few privately-owned, independent global web hosting companies out there. A relatively new provider, founded in 2013, they now accommodate over 50,000 small and midsized web projects.
FastComet has eight data center locations around the globe, so your website is as close to its visitors as possible. You can find servers in:
All VPS packages come with SSD drives in RAID 10 configuration (four hard drives working in pairs to ensure faster read and write processes). This setup completely eliminates the risk of data loss due to a failed hard drive.
They sure pack a lot of heat. Just look at this baby:
CPU Xeon CPU E5-2680 V3
CPU — 1 to 6 cores at 2.50GHz
RAM — 2GB to 16GB DDR4 RAM
Hard drive space — 50GB to 320GB SSD drives
Transfer cap — 2TB to 8TB
The best thing is:
There is dedicated processing power for each user. The host doesn’t throttle your CPU to conserve server resources.
Anyone can provide managed virtual server hosting, but few understand how to do those services properly.
Luckily, FastComet is among those hosts.
The company touts an in-house monitoring system on all levels — server, website, and infrastructure. The collected statistics make their way into helpful daily reports, along with optimization tips for your website.
Your newly-created VPS account will come with a free cPanel license, a web hosting manager (WHM), and a Softaculous 1-click installer to get you started.
Fastcomet also throws automated daily and weekly backups in the mix, so your website data can always be safe and sound.
All that adds up to your monthly bill, though, and FC can appear a bit expensive, even with their lowest plan.
I was impressed with the FastComet support right from the get-go. They provisioned and set up my new server in less than 15 minutes, faster than I could finish my morning coffee.
I noticed the provider advertises 24/7 support via chat, mail, phone, and tickets, which is somewhat typical for all the best VPS hosting providers in our list.
Do they make good on that promise, though?
I sent them a couple of tickets at different times of the day, and both support replies arrived within 10-15 minutes. And they were actually helpful, not just links to some half-explained tutorials.
A really pleasant experience overall.
FastComet Trustpilot score: 4.8 / 5 (879 reviews)
FastComet HostAdvice score: 9.6 / 10 (844 reviews)
FastComet is one of the crowd favorites in the hosting industry.
When you take a closer look at the client reviews, you’ll see the main reason behind that – the outstanding customer care. Four out of five users mention their satisfaction with the support operators in some way. New clients are especially happy with the onboarding process.
The smooth UX/UI experience and the fast servers are other factors that often please new and seasoned customers alike.
FastComet might accommodate mainly smaller and low-scale projects, but their VPS plans are powerful enough to handle even more resource-hungry websites. Their support team seem well-versed in what they are doing, so you can always expect timely assistance.

Media Temple is one of the “old dogs” in the hosting industry, founded more than two decades ago.
Just imagine how different the Web was back then!
The company currently hosts over 1.5 million clients in over 100 countries. Their state-of-the-art data centers reside on the two US coasts, adjoined with a redundant, low-latency fiber connection.
But do Media Temple put their experience to good use?
Let’s take a look.
Intel Xeon servers are well-known in the industry for reliability and high performance. Media Temple are well aware of that fact. Their managed premium VPS servers pack E5-2620 v4 processors, 2.10GHz with 20M cache.
What does that mean for you?
Your account can take advantage of 8 cores of processing power, 2GB RAM, and 30GB SSD storage, even with the lowest VPS plan. MediaTemple benefits from a wide range of servers, so you can gradually upgrade as your project grows.
One of the relatively new features in the Media Temple portfolio is the inclusion of Plesk Onyx, which is an alternative to the cPanel in terms of hosting management. A bit of extra choice always earns good points in my book.
Deconstructing the list of pre-installed software, you will find all the needed technology to get you started — PHP, MySQL, Perl, Python, Ruby, plus the YUM package management.
Sounds YUMmy, indeed!
Daily backups and 24/7 monitoring are included, in case you were wondering.
The top-tier VPS packages of Media Temple look particularly impressive feature-wise, but the price tags are not for the faint-hearted. The most robust plan is a whopping $1500/mo, which can buy you a couple of massive dedicated servers elsewhere.
Even with a discount for a new client, Media Temple’s VPS hosting prices are on the steep side.
I was anxious to check out how the support team of a 20+-year-old company stacks up against the competition. I mean, that is plenty of time to refine how you communicate with your clients, right?
Not really, as it seems.
My first try with the Live Chat started with a message:
“You’re now #2 in line. Your estimated wait is: 0 minutes.”
Cool, that doesn’t sound a lot…
…10 minutes later I was done waiting.
I decided to give them some time and went for it a second time:
“You’re now #1 in line. Your estimated wait is: 8 minutes.”
Wait, what? Now I am first in line but have to wait for eight minutes? That might be hours in Media Temple time…
…luckily an operator put an end to my misery after 3-4 minutes, and I finally got to ask my questions. It was actually a single question, and the sales rep took another 5 minutes to find a solution. In the form of a link, of course.
I was certainly not impressed with the support assistance, but I guess that’s always a risk with big companies.
Media Temple Trustpilot score: 2.3 / 5 (6 reviews)
Media Temple HostAdvice score: 4.6 / 10 (14 reviews)
For a company that has been around for 20+ years, Media Temple has surprisingly few user reviews online.
Clients are on the fence with MT. Some seem quite happy with the level of support and rich feature set, but others report server outages and billing problems, which are an alarming sign.
MediaTemple seems to focus on a broad scope of service offerings, where client support takes a back seat. On a managed virtual server, you are strongly reliant on the expertise of your host. Things can definitely improve in that direction.
That being said, if you are experienced enough to handle the setup yourself, you will enjoy a wealth of resources at your disposal.
Hostwinds, this Seattle based hosting company founded in 2010 pledges — “Our customers come first“. Based on my evaluation that is quite accurate. They have a very helpful support team!
Let us see how it faired on other key qualities of a good VPS host
To start, Hostwinds offers both managed and unmanaged VPS hosting services for Linux and Windows Servers.
It employs Intel Xeon E3 and E5 servers for their VPS plans. It also offers a plethora of configuration options – 1 to 16 CPU cores, 1 to 96GB RAM or 30 to 750GB SSD space, 1Gbps ports, US and EU data centers, enterprise firewall and more.
The cheapest managed VPS plan on Linux servers starts from $5.17/month after a discount. It comes with 1 CPU core, 1GB RAM, 30GB SSD storage, and 1TB bandwidth. Bigger managed VPS plans range from $10.34/mo to $23.97/mo (after discount) with a maximum of 2CPU cores, 6GB RAM and 100GB SSD.
All managed plans come with a 53% first-invoice discount — meaning you can subscribe for 1 or 20 months at that price if you pay it all on your first payment. On the second and later invoices, it costs $10.99/month.
Instant scalability of the plans is undoubtedly one of the best selling points for the host. Other features include seamless upgrading experience without any service downtimes, 99.99% uptime, free website transfers, redundant network, real-time server monitoring, and nightly-backups.
Hostwinds provides round-the-clock customer assistance via live chat and ticketing system.
The operator on the live chat promptly answered all my technical and support based queries. I have previously read some positive VPS hosting reviews about Hostwinds’ support, and it seems they are well-deserved.
Clients mostly agree that Hostwinds is a top VPS hosting choice.
Speed is of the essence and this provider heavily focuses on that – the servers are fast, the support assistance is fast, everything runs at high speeds.
Hostwinds is often praised by startups and first-time hosting clients, as the interface and control panel is a breeze to work with.
Hostwinds is an excellent choice for long-term projects, as they are ready with server options for websites of any type and size. I have noticed some dubious practices to watch out for, but nothing too crucial to ruin the deal if all else fits your requirements.
Free SSL, dedicated IP
Amazon AWS cloud
MilesWeb has been in the business since 2012. The company offers a full range of services – shared hosting, virtual hosting services, reseller, cloud, dedicated servers, and cheap domain names.
Let’s check its VPS hosting features and services.
With data centers in North America (US & Canada), Europe (UK), Asia (India & Singapore), Australia MilesWeb offers VPS hosting on Linux and Windows servers.
When it comes to actual hardware and plans, they’ve got some impressive machines. The most affordable VPS offer comes with 2 CPU cores, 2 RAM, and a good 50 GB SSD space at $9/mo (1-year plan). That’s more than enough for the average business, but just a starting point for MilesWeb.
There are five more plans to accommodate even the neediest enterprises, growing to the impressive 12 cores, 24 GB RAM, and 300 GB webspace. In terms of bandwidth, the upper limits of 700 GB are not particularly high, but still enough to smoothly run a blog or an ecommerce website with decent traffic.
The accounts look pretty robust from the inside.
Each MilesWeb VPS client gets a free SSL certificate, a dedicated IP, a choice between cPanel and Plesk for the control panel, root SSH access for full control over the server and its security, 1-click installer and more.
In addition to these regulars, MilesWeb adds extra features in terms of assistance. With the free setup, customization, and optimization they promise to fine-tune your server for better performance and security.
The Indian provider does not shy away when you need extra assistance. You can reach the Tech Support team 24/7 via email, live chat, and ticketing. The sales team supports all of these plus phone lines.
MilesWeb Trustpilot score: 4.8 / 5 (1,330 reviews)
MilesWeb HostAdvice score: 9.1 / 10 (652 reviews)
VPS reviews for MilesWeb are seemingly perfect. You have a lot of clients praising their customer support and reliable services. However, excellent reviews in a very short period of time and many of them looking similar 1-2 sentences saying how great the support was raises the question of fake reviews.
MilesWeb is a provider with strong positions in the Indian hosting market. Startups and growing businesses often find good use of the generous resource allocation and local support. The affordable prices are just the cherry on top of this lucrative offering.
KnownHost an American shared and virtual server hosting provider with an accent on green-certified services hosts clients from over 150 countries.
Mixing state-of-the-art technology with fast and professional support. Let’s put their VPS hosting services to test.
KnownHost tweaks its servers to provide the best possible performance. You can even choose to utilize Litespeed and LSCache for optimal load speeds and page caching.
The resource allocation is generous enough, but the upper limits are pretty low. The packages are not well-suited for larger and high-demand projects. The highest-tier servers offer up to 6 CPU cores, 8 GB RAM, 200 GB disk space, and 5 TB monthly traffic.
Upon signup, you can choose the location of your hardware – pick between Atlanta (US), Seattle (US), and Amsterdam (NL).
You have four distinct VPS web hosting packages with KnownHost.
Start by choosing your control panel – cPanel and DirectAdmin are both available. Even if you are currently working with Plesk, the KnownHost team will gladly help you migrate to cPanel for free.
As with other VPS competitors, the difference between server tiers is mainly in the amount of CPU/RAM/space/bandwidth, while the in-built features are available on all plans.
You’ve got a free SSL and two dedicated IPs. Daily backups are also part of the deal, storing your archived data on secure offsite locations.
In terms of security, all accounts receive complimentary DDoS protection, ensuring your safety against harmful attacks.
KnownHost offers some of the best VPS hosting services, thanks to its across-the-board support assistance.
You can reach Sales and Billing every day via phone, between 7 am – 7 pm CST or 24/7 via email. Tech Support is also there for you non-stop, via email or helpdesk ticketing. There is a live chat popup on the KH website, but it’s also online only during business hours.
Let’s see how that goes.
The KnownHost operators are a breath of fresh air – very polite and patient when dealing with newbie customers. They took their time to present the information in a comprehensive way and actually wanted to learn more about my project before coming up with an offer.
None of the sales pushing and upsells that many major companies seem to encourage.
In short, our VPS review revealed KnownHost has a lot to offer. Still, if they manage to make all support channels 24/7 available, things can only get better.
KnownHost Trustpilot score: 4.5 / 5 (18 reviews)
KnownHost HostAdvice score: 9.7 / 10 (194 reviews)
KnownHost doesn’t have its own company page on Trustpilot, searching there will only bring you results about the KH forums. The feedback there was quite outdated, so we checked a few alternative sources.
HostAdvice and WebHostingGeeks all confirmed our own impressions – KnownHost is a reliable host with a perfect uptime and helpful support operators.
KnownHost lures entrepreneurs and growing businesses with robust deals with a focus on speed and uptime. Operating your VPS is pretty straightforward. However, if you need some extra help – the KH operators are always ready to lend a hand,
Still, KnownHost prices start from $28/mo introductory ($50/mo renewal), which is far from cost-effective for startups on a budget.
If you’ve got even a basic idea of web hosting and domains, then you’ve probably already heard the name GoDaddy.
The company was founded back in 1997, the early internet era. It has been surrounded by controversy since then — from sexist ads and censorship allegations, all the way to their CEO’s poaching scandals.
Still, as one of the pioneers in web hosting, GoDaddy has grown so big and rich that a little bad press can’t slow down their expansion.
They now host over 78 million domains, with the runner up just under 9 million.
Let the numbers sink in for a minute.
I strongly believe GoDaddy can do better when it comes to the server machines for their VPS plans.
GD utilizes Intel E5-2620v3 with 15M cache and 2x600GB hard disks, which are inferior compared to those of the competition in this list. To add salt to the wound, they don’t provide an option for SSD hard drives, which are significantly faster and better-performing than the traditional HDD.
Feature-wise, GoDaddy can afford to pamper their clients a little. So their VPS packages look pretty good on paper, especially considering the feature/cost ratio.
I am saying “on paper” because GoDaddy is notorious for their hidden fees and limitations. So your bandwidth cap might be set at Unlimited, but this just means you will be facing other limits far before you accumulate huge traffic.
Still, for what you’re getting, the price is quite affordable.
The lowest offer starts from $19.99, but even that is subject to further VPS hosting discounts. They can bring the price below $10 if you prepay for a longer period.
I’d love to comment on GoDaddy’s level of support, but for me it’s non-existent.
The supposedly 24/7 Live Chat actually states “Hours: All day Mon-Fri,” but the connection button just said “Chat Busy” and didn’t even let me in a queue. I tried it at different times but always to no avail.
There is a 24/7 phone line…provided you can get your way around a ton of automated menus.
I received similar feedback from clients moving away from GoDaddy years ago, so I guess some things never change.
Update: I finally managed to connect to the Live Chat on day 3 but my experience was horrendous, to put it mildly. I had two simple sales questions, but the operator did not have any idea what I was talking about. She was pushing me generic links, and when I asked her to consult a technician, she came back a few minutes later…asking me what my username was.
My username? Really? In a sales chat where I clearly stated I was not an existing customer?
At this point, I was too frustrated to continue and just left the conversation.
GoDaddy Trustpilot score: 4.1 / 5 (8,722 reviews)
GoDaddy HostAdvice score: 9.1 / 10 (366 reviews)
When you are as big as GoDaddy, you will inevitably have a lot of fans, but a lot of haters as well.
On the positive side, you have the people praising the fast and easy signup, enhanced control, and domain prices.
On the other, there are the clients who are dissatisfied with the poor support and high renewal prices.
A GoDaddy rep is rather active on the review websites, but they mostly direct the unhappy customers to ticketing.
GoDaddy is certainly not my cup of tea, but I can’t just tell you to stay away. They are a longstanding company that won’t disappear overnight. Their low-level offers can safely accommodate projects of a smaller scale.
Just keep in mind that you are on your own, even on a managed VPS service. I wouldn’t rely much on their live assistance if I were you.
DreamVPS came to be in 2007 and presents itself as a “boutique provider of dedicated hosting solutions for businesses, entrepreneurs, and brand owners all over the world.”
The core team resides in Haifa, Israel and currently helps over 10,000 websites receive an immaculate hosting service.
Online information about the company is scarce. But from what I could gather from its official page, DreamVPS currently hosts 2,000+ servers in 12 data center locations worldwide.
Intel Xeon v5 3.50GHz processors with NVMe SSD storage power all of DreamVPS’s machines. The provider also claims some of the fastest network speeds, flying with 40Gbit/s per server.
You can choose an operating system upon signup and find a home for both Linux and Windows projects.
This host goes way and beyond when it comes to scalability. You can grow your account to an unprecedented size — 64 CPU cores, 228GB RAM, and 1TB SSD space.
Who would need such immense power, though? NASA?
(If you are indeed from NASA — hey, glad to have you on board).
DreamVPS offers four fixed VPS hosting deals—well, three are fixed, and the fourth is actually a custom server you can tweak for yourself.
The Starter package comes with 1 CPU core, 2GB RAM, and 30GB disk space. You also have a free dedicated IP, free SSL, and daily backups as a bonus.
So far, so good…
Once I started digging deep, however, things quickly started going downhill. First thing I noticed is, when you go to sign up, you can only choose 2-3 from the promised 12 data center locations.
But okay, let’s say that’s not such a big deal and I’ being a little nitpicky.
How about the same discrepancies, but with prices?
– the VPS page advertises hosting starting at $10.00/mo.
– the cheapest VPS deal seems to come at $17.80/mo.
– when you go to sign up, you get another three prices for different billing periods – $7.99, $16.99, and $29.99.
So now we have five different prices for the same product and no way to tell which is which.
Time to visit the DreamVPS reps and get to the bottom of this.
As you can see, I had a lot of questions for the DreamVPS support.
So, what do we have here?
The company advertises 24/7/365 support, although its contact page suggested phone and email are available only during business hours on weekdays.
Still, the beaming green popup on the bottom right corner suggested Live Chat was online.
Alright, let’s give it a go.
There was no chat queue — it seems that I simply needed to type something, and an operator would join the conversation…
…25 minutes and one monologue later I was fed up with it.
Now, I can understand getting conflicting information from a website — you can always miss something when making an update. But if people can’t reach you so you can explain those discrepancies, things start to look very shady.
In an industry where everyone is trying to build an impeccable reputation, DreamVPS doesn’t do much for its online image. On one hand, the hardware looks good, and the host offers robust packages. On the other hand, the confusing pricing and lack of a helping hand are the major hindrances that put the provider behind market competitors.
InterServer will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, a praiseworthy milestone for any hosting provider.
Two tech enthusiasts started the company, and their goal hasn’t changed for two decades — provide some of the best VPS services with a focus on affordability.
Not so long ago, the InterServer website used to look quite outdated, and the navigation felt rather clunky. I was happy to see the provider took note, and their latest redesign looks significantly better.
Even though Interserver didn’t go on to expand as other older companies did, this just meant they could focus more on product innovation and improving client relationships (hopefully).
What I appreciate in InterServer’s offerings is their willingness to cater to all kinds of projects. That reflects from the variety of VPS plans, which start from a small 1 CPU core, 2GB RAM account, and steadily grow to their most powerful deal — a massive 16-core, 32GB RAM monster, equipped with 480GB storage space.
All hard drives are SSD, which ensures 20x better speeds than a traditional HDD.
At first glance, Interserver seems to pack some lucrative VPS deals, but digging down their feature list, I can see why.
You can add managed support only if you sign up for a tier 4 plan (from $24.00/mo) or above. If you wish to use cPanel, you have to purchase it separately. Backups are also subject to additional fees.
When you draw the line, the low price reflects on the small set of features. But that comes with an asterisk as well — InterServer do not offer any free trial or money back guarantee. So if you don’t like the service — you know where the door is.
That wasn’t even the biggest disappointment!
When I tried the order process just so I can get to test the options and check out the billing cycles, I hit another obstacle.
To get more details and purchase, I had to register an account first.
Really? I have to leave all my personal information even if I don’t finish my order?
Yeah, as if!
I did more in-depth research and, as it turned out, this change was introduced rather recently. It makes no sense to me why you would deliberately make your service look shady and not secure.
Up to this point, I was under the impression that every premium host tries to offer 24/7 support on multiple channels (or at least they advertise so).
So imagine my disappointment when I found no live chat options with InterServer. Oftentimes you cannot afford to waste hours going back and forth with a ticketing system and need an issue resolved quickly. Without real-time assistance, the whole support process becomes unnecessarily long and complicated.
Interserver Trustpilot score: 4.0 / 5 (20 reviews)
Interserver HostAdvice score: 9.1 / 10 (337 reviews)
Recent VPS reviews about Interserver reveal the service is good even for bigger and more complex projects. Even more so – the services are quite cost-effective for the resources they pack, which is often an important selling point.
The best thing is, many users have been using the virtual servers for years, attesting to the great reliability of Interserver.
A commendable effort, but InterServer is far from the title “Best VPS hosting provider.” The lack of live assistance and additional cost for essential features makes them a pretty risky choice. The data collection practice was the biggest problem for me, and I wouldn’t trust a money-making project with this host.
You see, the VPS market has a lot to offer. Countless providers come up with fantastic virtual server promotions, just so you can too get a glimpse of the many benefits that come with such a service.
But don’t let the sheer number of choices frustrate you. Separating the wheat from the chaff can be quite easy if you outline your needs…and watch out for a few key things.
In many ways — yes. While the setup and infrastructure seem deceptively similar, there are significantly fewer clients on a VPS. The fewer people on a server there are, the more resources and better security for everyone.
Furthermore, there are significantly fewer limitations on a VPS environment, and you can easily add additional processing power as your project grows. There is no scalability in a shared environment — if you hit the limits, you must upgrade.
KVM stands for keyboard-video-mouse and outlines a type of server virtualization and management. KVM makes a standard VPS server feel and operate as a dedicated server. The client is completely isolated from others on the same machine and uses his or her own amount of processing power.
If you are just starting out with a new project, a VPS plan might be an overkill. You can try a reliable shared hosting package first and upgrade to VPS when you outgrow its confines. It’s best to check your current resource consumption beforehand and consult with your potential provider about the best plan to start with.
Unmanaged VPS services are all about control. The hosting provider takes care of the initial setup and hardware installations. You’re on your own from there on. You have the freedom to operate your virtual server as you wish, but if you don’t know what you’re doing – you can soon find yourself in a world of trouble.
Suitable for experienced professionals and projects that require a specific setup.
With managed services, your host is at the helm of your server. It takes care of monitoring, backups, and security measures. It can provide additional assistance should anything go wrong. You get less control but have a team of professionals looking after your project.
Suitable for beginners and business owners with no previous server knowledge.
Any VPS server has to have an operating system so you can run your desired software. If your machine operates with a Windows OS, you can create websites using .Net technology. Another option is to utilize Windows-specific tools, such as nopCommerce, DotNetNuke, Sitefinity, and Umbraco.
Still, Microsoft products come with their license fees, so Windows VPS services are generally more expensive than Linux.
Linux is an open-source OS, so it comes with much more freedom and scalability than Windows. Popular CMS applications like WordPress and Joomla also find Linux as the best environment for their services.
Windows might be more popular when it comes to desktop computers, but when we talk about web servers, the open-source OS is a clear market dominator. Linux and all its distributions power over 95% of all websites worldwide.
SSD hosting is a relatively new technology that recently made its mark in VPS services as well. It outlines the way you store data on your server.
Solid state drives (SSD) come as an alternative to traditional hard disks (HDD). The new technology quickly proved to be faster, more durable, and more efficient overall. That was largely due to the lack of mechanical moving parts, which makes the drive lighter and more durable.
Still, HDD drives are cheaper and can provide more storage space than SSD.
As with shared hosting, you will not struggle to find free or suspiciously cheap VPS servers. But you know what they say – if it sounds too good to be true, it most probably is.
Cheap VPS servers often come with severe limitations and hidden restrictions. Add that to the fact that many free providers like to run ads on client websites, and you can easily see why this is not a long-term solution for any reputable business.
You can choose free or cheap VPS services if you plan to run a test project or a hobby website that doesn’t require much server resources.
Many providers offer WordPress hosting services, but very few actually optimize their services for the most popular CMS.
Specific WP services include automatic backups and updates, site staging, essential plugins, app-related support.
If your VPS server is WordPress-optimized, you should have seamless access to install, modify, and update your application at any time. On a managed VPS solution, you have to rely on the host’s WP professionals to handle all technicalities.
Prices can vary considerably between hosts, but the best VPS hosting providers will keep a good ratio between price and resources. You can easily find offers for less than $10/mo, but if you need something more powerful, be prepared to invest at least $30-$40/mo.
