In July 2021, Google Cloud launched a new facility, “australia-southeast2”, in Melbourne, Australia. It promised to strengthen the nation’s technological capabilities. During the evening of August 23rd, 2021, however, it experienced a major disruption.
When the issue occurred, users were unable to create new virtual machines in the Google Cloud. Cloud storage and load balancers were unavailable too.
The outage affected 13 services initially. Over the course of restoring the service, that number increased to a total of 23, including the company’s high availability gateways for VPNs.
Google published an analysis of the disruption in the interest of transparency. It identified “transient voltage at the feeder to the network equipment,” which caused the equipment to reboot, as the main reason for the outage.
The equipment of cloud providers is built to resist such incidents, but, of course, no technology is watertight. Hiccups are expected when rolling out a project of this size. It is still not clear whether the affected equipment belongs to Google or a supplier.
Google acted quickly to restore the service. The entire incident lasted roughly 90 minutes. If users in the region are still experiencing issues, the company urges them to get in contact through the official Support Hub.
