What Is AWeber?
AWeber is an email automation platform featuring all tools to run a successful email campaign, generate leads, and buff your sales funnel. It’s built a long track record since its launch in 1998.
The service offers a free plan with a host of basic features, while its paid plans unlock more advanced options and subscriber capacity.
Let’s break it all down.
AWeber Best Features
In the first part of our AWeber review, you’ll get a full rundown on the top features.
While most of them are tech-related, the last one embodies the platform’s best practices and ensures you’re not only getting quality service but providing it, too.
AWeber allows you to set up full email campaigns. You can put together a collection of emails and schedule them. For entirely automated workflows, you can also plan to send emails in response to user interactions.
AWeber automation features “tagging.” When a user is tagged, you’ll know how they got into the system.
With this information, you can use email segmentation to send user-specific emails with workflow triggers. The platform includes 13 segmentation presets, but you can create an unlimited amount of custom ones if you’re on a paid plan.
After a customer buys a product, the AWeber autoresponder can send them emails with other offers. If they don’t open them, you can try to win back the customer’s attention with a different email geared towards that purpose.
Integrations are additional tools by other services that can be linked to your AWeber account. The platform has over 350 native and hundreds of third-party integration services like Zapier and Piesync.
AWeber has integration for everything.
You can reach users through Facebook, bring in landing pages from Unbounce, or add a Paypal widget to your email for direct payment collection.
You can even link AWeber with WordPress.
You can create emails in plain text, HTML, or with AWeber’s drag-and-drop editor. With the latter, you can also make landing pages and sign-up forms. As the name implies, you just have to select the elements you want and drag them into place. While it’s serviceable, it isn’t the best drag-and-drop we’ve used.
But more on that later.
With Google AMP support in place, AWeber offers over 700 mobile-responsive templates. You can also increase your design options by linking Canva from inside the builder.
White labeling doesn’t come with the free plan. If you’re using it, your pages will have the AWeber branding.
In addition to stock templates, AWeber also has a “smart designer” for linking your website or social media page. It takes images and theme colors from the site and creates a template. You get consistent branding at the click of a button.
If you want your AWeber campaigns to stand out, we’d recommend the smart designer, as the stock templates get a little repetitive.
AWeber allows you to split test up to three variations of an email to see which one performs the best in open-rate, click-through-rate, bounce rate, and spam complaints. You can select the three variations and then use a slider or numeral boxes to choose how to distribute them.
If you’re looking for feedback, pick a 10/10/80 split, and give your main variant the most spread to minimize disruptions to your regular activity.
Once the results are in, AWeber reviews the performance and breaks down the percentages for each category.
You’ll find analytics under the “Reports” tab in the AWeber email marketing user interface.
These reports will show you user activity statistics and data on subscriber growth broken into daily, weekly, and monthly views. The bar and line graphs visualization make it easy to interpret the numbers.
The AWeber software can also review sales activity on your website after you install the tracking code. Note that statistics are list-specific, and you can download them as CSV files.
AWeber Mobile App Suite
AWeber offers three mobile apps for checking performance, gathering leads, and sending info on the go.
You can check how your email campaign is going through the AWeber Stats app. If you want to add subscribers to your email manually on mobile, you can do so with AWeber Atom.
It’s perfect for brick and mortar businesses or gathering leads and converting them into contacts at events.
Curate, the final AWeber support app, allows you to create and publish newsletters on the fly. It’s great for bloggers who want to send frequent updates.
All three apps are available on Android and iOS.
This feature is a bit more abstract, and it’s how the platform oversees your service. AWeber knows that deliverability in email marketing is of the paramount importance, meaning how likely your emails are to make it into someone’s inbox.
You can improve your chances by ensuring the emails are relevant to the recipients and they’ve opted-in to receive them. Otherwise, they might mark your emails as spam, which will drop your trust rating.
You must build trust and strive for organic growth. Luckily, AWeber protects your rating with a zero tolerance for spamming and pre-bought lists.
It also requires a physical address in the footer of your emails. As you’ll see later, some users disagree with these best practices against their own interests.
What We Disliked
AWeber is a solid email automation service, but we at HostingTribunal do have two complaints — the builder and billing.
The Email Template Editor Is Clunky
We found the editor to be quite cumbersome. The element placement can be quite restrictive, and the various overlays would often clash when adjusting settings.
While we attempted to preview templates, elements of different ones would sometimes merge. We understand that’s done to preserve the input text, but a more streamlined preview system would be appreciated.
The AWeber Cost Includes Unsubscribed Contacts
While AWeber allows an unlimited amount of subscribers, it charges you extra depending on how many you have. It’d be more accurate to refer to them as “contacts” because the tally includes unsubscribed “dead” contacts, too.
You have to go through your mail list and delete unsubscribed contacts manually, or you could see yourself paying extra with no benefit.
If your contact numbers reach a new bracket, AWeber will automatically bill you for it next month.
AWeber Price Plans
AWeber offers two plans — Free and Pro. The Pro Plan’s pricing scales depending on the billing cycle you select and how many subscribers you have. Here are all the details:
- Free Plan — includes everything above, except split testing and email sales tracking. It also limits you to 500 subscribers.
- Pro Plan — divided into monthly, quarterly, and annual blocks. The more you sign on for, the cheaper it gets, but the AWeber discount between the quarterly and yearly plans is marginal. Aside from greater capacity and testing features, you’ll also have white labeling.
Prices go as follows: the monthly is $19 per month, quarterly — $16.33 per month, and annual plan costs $16.15 per month. Here’s how much you have to pay for subscriber hosting on AWeber systems:

AWeber Customer Service
Our experience with AWeber’s customer service was good. Both free and paid members can access it. We wanted to know more about email segmentation, so we contacted the support via email, and their response was quick, friendly, and incredibly in-depth.
That said, we also tried to use the 24/7 Live Chat multiple times during our review process, but it just didn’t work.
AWeber User Reviews
We took a look at user reviews to see how others find AWeber’s service. Many of them appreciate the resources at their disposal, including the knowledge base, extensive stock image gallery, and range of templates.
Smaller business owners are very happy with the free plan.
User complaints focus on importing email lists. Some AWeber reviews find the option to add only 10 contacts per session a bit restrictive, while others get mixed results with imported CSV files.
The drag-and-drop editor is divisive. More than one AWeber review on Reddit agreed with us that it’s cumbersome, but others seem to like it.
Some users don’t like the best practices enforcement. They want the option to use bought lists and exclude their address from the email footer. These AWeber reviews reflect well on the platform.
They show that it takes a hard line on quality control to ensure a good delivery rate for all its honest clients.
Is AWeber Worth It?
AWeber is definitely worth it.
The free plan can carry a small business’ email marketing. Its paid plans are relatively cheap when you consider the provided support for landing pages and other features.
You’d be paying much higher prices for this with full CRM services.
Email automation services aren’t shy about comparing themselves, so we won’t be either. If you’re still shopping around and want to explore a few more options, check out these alternatives.
MailChimp vs AWeber
When it comes to email marketing, MailChimp is the industry leader. Its basic plan is cheaper than AWeber and includes A/B or split testing.
If you opt for one of its pricier plans, you’ll also get access to a level of analytics and multivariate testing that AWeber doesn’t offer.
Still, AWeber offers more native integrations than MailChimp and imposes no email send limits.
AWeber vs GetResponse
GetResponse is slightly cheaper than AWeber, but the two are on par in their offers at this level.
If you want access to GetResponse’s more advanced features, you’ll end up spending a lot more than you would for AWeber, which makes everything available in one price plan.
Constant Contact vs AWeber
AWeber and Constant Contact offer more or less the same.
The difference is primarily that the former is the cheaper service. AWeber’s simple pricing means every paid plan includes the same, whereas Constant Contact staggers its plans by price, necessitating upgrades as your business grows.
All that’s left to say in our AWeber review for 2021 is that this is a veteran email marketing platform.
It has everything you need to grow your subscriber lists and follow-up for improving your customer retention.
AWeber’s strength doesn’t rest squarely on the tools it provides, but in the quality control it enforces, too.
The platform automates your email marketing. Learning how to use AWeber is easy. It streamlines everything from lead collection to actual email campaigns and follow-ups. You can also make use of over 1000 integrations.
While AWeber offers much of what Mailchimp does, MailChimp is widely regarded as the industry leader and best email software. Since it’s the bigger platform, it also has more resources, and international users will find it more accessible. But the fees differ by region, so those not in the US pay a higher price.
AWeber is free to use. It offers everything you need if you’re starting with email marketing. If you need advanced features, the paid pricing plans have you covered. Keep in mind that the more contacts you have, the more you’ll pay.
