Unless you’ve used it yourself, chances are you haven’t heard of TorGuard. The “Tor” in its name doesn’t refer to the Tor network. It stands for torrenting and this focus is what’s attracted its dedicated user base throughout the years.

Let us be your Tor-guide as we walk you through the ins and outs of the service in HostingTribunal’s in-depth TorGuard review.

What Is TorGuard?

TorGuard is primarily a VPN service, but it also offers a range of related products—secure email, business packages, and custom routers to suit any cybersecurity needs. We’ll focus primarily on the VPN tech in our TorGuard VPN review for 2021.

TorGuard Features

TorGuard offers most of what you’d expect from a VPN service, but the way it goes about it is a little different from the norm. But let’s start with the general features before we move on to the specialist areas.

Multi-Platform VPN

You can use TorGuard for Mac, Windows, and numerous Linux configurations. The service allows you to connect up to eight devices at once, so everyone except the biggest cyberpunk is sure to be covered.

Split Tunneling

The service doesn’t offer split tunneling as a standard feature, except on TorGuard for Android. That said, in our journey through multiple forums, we discovered it’s possible to enable it for desktops too. To do so, you have to use the following feature:

Custom Script Support

TorGuard allows users to implement custom scripts to customize the functionality of the service. For example, users can add the function of auto-opening preferred webpages or active apps upon startup.

There are plenty of TorGuard support resources, such as guides and script templates on the website, to facilitate the implementation of this rather advanced feature.

TorGuard Router Support

TorGuard is partnered with Privacy Router, which sells a number of devices preconfigured to run its VPN services. Look out for free offers—TorGuard includes them in various service packages.

At the time of writing, a free mini router is offered with the two-year streaming package. But more on that later.

TorGuard Mobile Apps

TorGuard for iPhone and Android has recently been updated. The mobile app has a more modern look for a user-friendly experience. Many of the desktop features were configured for convenience and simplicity.

TorGuard Browser Extension Options

TorGuard for Chrome and Firefox are available as browser extensions. The service provides proxies in 50+ countries—far more versatile than most VPNs. But, unlike most browser extensions, these don’t come for free. To enable them, you need a TorGuard account.

TorGuard in China

The one country that always comes up in VPN discussions is China. With its strict limitations and online censorship, it’s not easy to find a service that can bypass the Great Firewall.

While most VPN vendors are cautious when handling the subject, this provider holds nothing back—TorGuard’s servers are built for stealth.

TorGuard Security

Like any good VPN, TorGuard doesn’t skimp on its safety. In this part of our TorGuard review, we’ll break down its security features and functionality.

Stealth VPN

TorGuard is especially proud of its stealth VPN technology. When you select a server and proxy with such configuration, your online footprint is covered by a tunneling protocol with an extra layer of protection. Your movements are disguised as regular foot traffic, duping deep packet inspections that are actively sniffing out VPNs.

Security Protocols

Is TorGuard VPN safe? By supporting OpenVPN, IKEv2, L2TP, and WireGuard, TorGuard ensures maximum protection when you’re browsing the web. OpenVPN is the default setting, but you can change it to your liking with a range of configurations.

DNS Leak Protection

TorGuard provides complete protection against domain name system (DNS) attacks and other leaks. No TorGuard anonymity test failed during our research for this TorGuard VPN review.

TorGuard Logging Policy

TorGuard is owned by an American company. This may make some people nervous, as the US is part of data-sharing alliances. But you don’t have to worry—TorGuard’s website is hosted in the West Indies and it follows a zero-logging policy. This means it’s not obligated to log your activity or visited sites, so it has nothing to hand over or be seized.

Kill Switch

While TorGuard has one, it’s not an automatic killswitch. You have to configure it to your preferences. Various scripts are available on TorGuard’s website to help you do that.

Encryption

TorGuard supports the highest-grade encryption on the market—AES-256. In case TorGuard is running slow, you can switch to AES-128 or BlowFish for the retro-enthusiasts out there.

Bitcoin Payments

TorGuard accepts several payment methods, including Bitcoin some altcoins like LiteCoin and DogeCoin. The provider makes use of BTCpay with an encrypted connection and lowers transaction fees too.

Speed

TorGuard speeds are generally good, although your results may vary depending on your location. With 3,000+ TorGuard servers in 50+ countries, you should be able to find one that suits you. Note that if you’re using it with the software installed directly to your router, speeds will be slightly lower.

Torrenting

This is TorGuard’s forte—after all, it’s in the name. With TorGuard, port forwarding is optimized to provide stable and fast P2P (point-to-point connection). Supporting numerous torrenting clients, the service emphasizes its capabilities rather than skirting them as many other services do.

Streaming

Looking to beat a geolocation blocker to access foreign streaming libraries is perhaps the most common use for VPNs in free countries. Unfortunately, this service isn’t that straightforward with TorGuard. Many people using the basic TorGuard plan report Netflix not working. To fix that issue, you need to purchase the streaming package.

It includes everything the basic plan does, plus dedicated streaming IPs exclusive to you. This will cost you $21.98 per month—$11 more than the basic package. This is a strange pricing choice, given that virtually every other premium VPN includes this service in the basic package. Still, you may be glad to learn that TorGuard supports Firestick—a hotly desired VPN feature.

Ease of Use

The software is easy to install but not as easy to use. The features you’d expect to see front and center are often tucked away in menus. The design of the client is a bit dated. And as we already mentioned in our TorGuard VPN review, a few features that should be there by default have to be installed and set up manually.

Luckily, TorGuard has extensive guides to help and its customer support responds promptly to any requests.

TorGuard Pricing

We could dedicate an entire review to the pricing plans. But for the purposes of this TorGuard review, we’ve condensed them down to their most important parts.

If you’re switching from another service, you can present your latest VPN bill to the company and receive a TorGuard VPN free trial of 7 days.

Anonymous VPN

All Anonymous plans include the same features—unlimited speeds, access to all 3,000+ servers, blocking ads, leaks, and malware, etc. The price varies according to the subscription period.

  • The VPN Monthly Plan is $9.99 per month.
  • The VPN Quarterly subscription ($19.99) will set you back $6.66/month.
  • The Semi-Annual ($29.99) and Annual ($59.99) plans cost $4.99 per month—that’s 50% off the monthly cost. With the Annual plan, for an additional $20, you can get more simultaneous connections and a free TorGuard router.
  • The VPN Biennial Plan is $4.17/month or $99.99 total—58% off the monthly costs.
  • The VPN Triennial Plan has the lowest monthly price at $3.89 per month, with a total cost of $139.99. That’s over 60% saved on monthly fees, scoring you everything the basic plan has to offer!

Anonymous Pro plans’ pricing is based on the same principle. On top of the basic plans’ features, they include more ports for port forwarding, regular dedicated IPs, and 10G addon.

  • The VPN Monthly Plan is $12.99 per month.
  • The VPN Quarterly subscription will set you back $34.99, the Semi-Annual—$69.99, and the Annual—$119.
  • The TorGuard pricing for the Biennial Plan is around $7.71/month or $185 total.
  • The VPN Triennial Plan has the lowest monthly price at $6.94 per month, with a total cost of $249.99.

Streaming Plans

The streaming plans cost double the price of the respective basic VPN plans. These plans include everything the basic plans have, as well as dedicated IPs that will allow you to unblock region locked content and use TorGuard VPN with Netflix.

Business Bundles

The business plans will set you back $32.99/month for five user packages, $69/month for ten, $110 for 15, and $169 for 20.

These are essentially “bundle deals.” They have everything the basic package includes, but they also come with secure email accounts and dedicated IPs. Necessities if you’re running a business that requires secure communication between clients and your staff.

TorGuard Support

The service’s customer support is excellent. We wanted to learn more about the dedicated IPs for streaming to complete our TorGuard VPN review. We emailed the team asking what would happen if Netflix were to identify our IP as originating from a VPN and then block it.

Just over five minutes later, we received a detailed response assuring us that dedicated IPs are guaranteed to work for streaming. If ours was blocked, we’d receive another free of charge.

User Reviews

We scoped out some TorGuard user reviews to get an idea of others’ experiences. The TorGuard rating on Trustpilot is 4.5. We also noticed that a TorGuard support agent actively responds to negative reviews on the site and helps fix any issues.

Users praise the customer support, the stealth tech’s effectiveness, and the TorGuard VPN torrenting capabilities. Complaints focused mainly on the clunky interface and the complexity of enabling features that other services have as defaults.

There were two main areas of contention—speed and price. Some users find the service fast, while others complain it’s slow. We can only assume it has to do with users’ locations or settings.

Price is more subjective. Some applauded the frequency of sales, while others understandably complained about having to pay extra for streaming.

We Recommend TorGuard for

Hopefully, our TorGuard VPN review convinced you that the service is excellent for torrenting. Especially if you’re a veteran user who knows exactly what they want in terms of configurations. Its airtight security will make sure you’re safe on hard-to-reach sharing sites and foreign territories.

It’s also a great choice for business owners. You don’t have to hassle with multiple subscriptions or leave security up to the individual employee. Take advantage of TorGuard’s business packages and the expert advice it has onboard to aid implementation.

TorGuard Alternatives

If TorGuard seems a little tricky to use effectively or if you’d rather use a VPN with more affordable streaming services, consider these alternatives.

TorGuard vs Hotspot Shield

If you’re a newbie in the VPN world, Hotspot Shield is a great place to start. It offers all essential services and comes with solid streaming support in its premium package. TorGuard, on the other hand, is an excellent choice for advanced users looking for a highly secure VPN solution.

TorGuard vs NordVPN

NordVPN is possibly the best VPN service we’ve reviewed. It’ll give you everything you need at an all-inclusive price. The most significant advantage of TorGuard is that you can customize it to your preference if you have the necessary skills and a little patience.

TorGuard vs ExpressVPN

If TorGuard’s torrenting capabilities excite you, but the extra price for streaming will stretch your budget, check out ExpressVPN. It’s got you fully covered on both fronts for a single price.

Verdict

With solid security in place and customer support that is truly 24/7/365, TorGuard is a fantastic VPN service. That said, it may alienate new or casual users due to the lack of a free trial, the extra cost for streaming services, and the somewhat complex setup of certain features.

Still, note that the streaming support, once paid for, is guaranteed. If other services might be inconsistent in that regard, TorGuard is a sure bet if you can foot the bill.
